The three casualties of the Aug. 23 knife attacks in the German city of Solingen were reportedly pro-migrant activists supporting “integration” and “tolerance,” according to a report.
According to the Associated Press (AP), the attack happened during the first day of the three-day Festival of Diversity that celebrated Solingen’s 650th anniversary. The festival, which was supposed to end on Aug. 25, was canceled following the aftermath of the stabbing that killed three persons and wounded eight.
The AP initially reported that police believe a lone attacker carried out the stabbings. Remix News confirmed in a separate piece that this was the case, identifying the perpetrator as Issa Al H., who hails from Syria. The 26-year-old migrant was supposed to have been deported in 2022, but Germany’s leftist government even gave him protected status after he went into hiding for six months. According to Remix News, the casualties were reportedly “liberal-minded” and at least one of the three belonged to a pro-migrant organization. “Given that the murders happened at the Festival of Diversity, it is no surprise that many of the victims belong to left-leaning organizations dedicated to progressive topics, such as an openness to refugees,” the outlet continued.
Pharmacist Ines W. was one of the three victims in the stabbing. According to the German newspaper Rheinische Post, she attended the Festival of Diversity because it was “very important to her.” Ines W. was a member of the OTV canoeists, who had campaigned for integration with foreigners and whose members have reportedly met to mourn together.
Florian H., the second victim, was a resident of Dusseldorf whose workplace was located in Solingen. While details about him have been scant, neighbors have described him as a “rock and roll” guy who sported a ponytail and liked to play guitar.
Stefan S., the third victim, worked in Wuppertal. The Rheinische Post described the 67-year-old as “a liberal, educated person, someone who wanted to understand all sides.” The broadsheet continued: “For a cosmopolitan person like him, it was only logical to visit the ‘Festival of Diversity’ in Solingen.”
Stefan S.’s colleagues at Oetelshofen said they were “deeply affected by the loss of their long-time colleague.” Till Iseke, managing director for the lime works, described the victim as “a person who thought outside the box and lived by values ??such as openness and tolerance.”
Aside from the three, members of the Solingen cultural association Cobra – including its board members – were injured in the attack. The association is not political but organizes live events and concerts in the city, Remix News noted.
“We are still shocked by the events of [Aug. 23]. We feel deep sadness for the dead and great sympathy for their relatives,” the association wrote on Facebook.
During an Aug. 29 press conference, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the Solingen attack has “shocked us” deeply. She then proceeded to announce “tough measures” to ostensibly prevent similar incidents, alongside German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann.
According to the interior minister, knives will be prohibited at festivals, “sports events and other similar public events,” as well as on long-distance trains. Faeser also mentioned that police officers will be given more powers to search members of the public for knives. However, there will be reasonable exceptions to the ban – such as for performers and those working in hospitality.
But even though Berlin puts prohibitions on knives in place, such stabbings won’t stop as long as migrants who don’t obey German laws are admitted in the name of openness, inclusion and diversity.
